Hirakud College Hirakud Sambalpur

About  Hirakud College, Hirakud, Sambalpur

Hirakud College, Hirakud stands in the close vicinity of the world's longest masonary river dam, universally known as the Hirakud Dam. Only 15 kilometres from the historic city of Sambalpur, this small centre of education is geographically endowed with an apparently wood-environed neighbourhood with a massive block of mountain on one side and a hillock nearby interspersed with plantation thereabout, which almost keeps it undisturbed from the din and bustle of the industrial town.

The idea of establishing a college dates back to 22nd January,1979,when ,under the aegis of a maverick personality like Late J.K.Sahu,the then Minister,Urban Development and Excise,Government of Orissa, a public meeting attended by people from different walks of life was held, and after much deliberation and confabulation it was resolved to start a college from the following session.

Accordingly, a committee of 31 members was formed. The day of deliverance came on 11th of July 1979. The brain-child of Hirakud public - Hirakud College, Hirakud_ took its shape. The college was started in the A.O.T.S. Hostel. At first the college was named as 'NILAMANI ROUTROY N.A.C. COLLEGE', having Arts Stream (I.A.) with compulsory subjects English and M.I.L. and optional subjects like History, Economics, Logic, Oriya and Political Science. The Commerce Stream (I.Com.) opened later from the next academic session.

The Governing Body renamed this college under their Resolution No. 5 dated 23.12.82 as HIRAKUD COLLEGE, HIRAKUD. Subsequently, the college opened Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) & Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com.) and acquired the status of a Degree College in the year 1981-82.

The college was housed in an abandoned building of all officers training school. Catering to the needs of the students in pursuing higher education, it offered subjects in Arts and Commerce Streams with honours teaching facilities in the under graduate level. Students' enrolment strength increased day by day, but the infrastructural insufficiency came in the way as a great hindrance in the teaching and learning process of the students and staff as well.In the year 1993-94 the college opened +2 Science stream having a good number of students but gradual decrease in enrolment led to the closure of the science stream in the year 2002-03.

An idea of self-reliance and self-sufficiency occurred to the then Principal and members of the staff. Thereupon, with a single-minded devotion, a college building with an administrative block was erected over its own sprawling land of 10 Acres in the nearby area of the town (Opposite the FCI, Larpank). But the long cherished desire of the students, staff and the public was fulfilled only on 25th of February 2008 and the college got the UGC status and thereby got included under Section - 2 (f) and 12 (B) of the UGC Act.
