About Berhampur City College, Berhampur, Ganjam
The College was established in the academic session 1978-79, under the name Berhampur Tutorial College. Late Devraj Panigrahy, an eminent educationist accepted to act as the principal of the College. A group of young enthusiastic teachers undertook the job on honorary basis. Late R.B. Rajguru (Advocate) willingly accepted the offer to chair the post of the President of the Managing committee. The college started functioning during 1978 being housed in K.C.Town High School, Berhampur. In January 1978 the college was captioned as "Berhampur City College". Dr Jhasaketan Sahu,the then Hon'ble Minister of Urban Development inaugurated the College on 20th January 1979 and declared an aid of One Lakh rupees from Octroi fund of Berhampur Municipality which was subsequently released by Brudaban Nayak, Chairman of Berhampur Municipality, as security deposit of the college for affiliation.
Dr. Benimadhab Padhi , an eminent educationist, a renowned Oriya and Sanskrit Scholar receipient of Sahitya Bharati Samman took over the charge of Principal in December 1979. In 1980 the College received concurrence and affiliation of the Government and University respectively for opening of I.A. with 64 seats , I.Com with 32 seats, which subsequently increased to 128 and 64 respectively.
In September 1983 , I.Sc. Classes opened with 32 seats. Afterwards the college was duly affiliated to C.H.S.E.(Orissa), Bhubaneswar during the session 1983-84. In 1989 Permission was granted to open +3 Degree Classes in Arts stream with 128 seats. The College constructed its own building on the land provided by the Government at Ambapua, Berhampur.The college has been registered under section 2(f) , 12(B)of U.G.C. from the session 2006-2007 and has become eligible for UGC Grant.
