Kuntala Kumari Sabat Women's College, situated in Balasore town, is the only Government Women's College in the districts of Balasore and Bhadrak as well as under Fakir Mohan University. The College took its birth on 1^st July, 1960 due to endeavour of local elites with a view to promoting higher education for women in Balasore. It was first named as Women's College, Balasore. It started under a private management as Degree College, with teaching facilities in humanities only. Late K.C. Dey was its first Principal and chief patron. The State Government took over the management of the college from 01.10.1965. Subsequently, the college was named after the illustrious Oriya poetess and Doctor Kuntala Kumari Sabat on 14.07.1976. Science faculty was introduced in the College at +2 streams from the Degree College in the year 2001-02, the +2 wing is known as K.K.S. Women's Junior College. While the +2 stream is affiliated to the Council of Higher Secondary Education, Orissa, the +3 or Degree Courses are affiliated to Fakir Mohan University, Balasore.

      This pioneer institution is sthe citadel of learning in Orissa catering mostly to the higher education needs of women in the northern part of Orissa. This College has ample infrastructural facilities in terms of accommodation such Smart Class Room, Reading Room, Lending Library, Seminar Library, Class Rooms, Laboratories, Gymnasium, Administrative Block, independent departmental rooms, Common rooms for Staff and Students, Canteen and a three storied Hostel with 120 capacity. There is provision for honours teaching in eleven subjects viz. English, Oriya, Sanskrit, Economics, Education, History, Home Science, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology and Sociology leading to B.A. Degree.

     This performance of the students in the University examinations has been outstanding, as they bag the most coveted first class first position and other Positions every year.

     The College has been included in Section 2(f) & 12 (B) of the U.G.C. Act and listed in the UGC Directory of recognized institutions at Sl. No. 15 of page 473. It has been accredited with B+ Grade by the National Assessment and Accredition Council, Bangalore in February, 2006 which adds to the glory of the College.

     Thus the College has grown from a humble beginning to its present status. It has successfully been promoting higher education for women in the State for the last 51 years.
