 Ekamra College , Bhubaneswar was established in the year 1978 with the active stewardship of Late Dr. Harekrushna Mahatab, a legendary figure of the State widely acclaimed as the modern architect of the land . His dynamism to establish a College in the old base of the Capital City was enthusiastically supported by some local Socialites who joined this noble mission and put all their efforts to give shape to his dream. So came this premiere institute of the Capital City to its being on 22nd August 1978 which started functioning in the premises of B.M. High School, Old Town and was formally inaugurated on 6th of the September the same year.

The College which started functioning in 1978 and subsequently getting concurrence and affiliation in the year 1979 with 189 students and 11 teaching staff & 3 non-teaching staff in a nearby high school was further shifted in the year 1981 to its own campus located in ten acres of land in Kapil Prasad in the old town of Capital City now has a total strength of 2172 students, 46 teaching staff and 32 non-teaching staff.

The College is recognized by the Govt. of Odisha and and was first affiliated to Utkal University. But with the change in the pattern of Education system, the College was subsequently affiliated to the Council of Higher Secondary Education, Odisha from the Session 1983-84 to impart instruction for +2 Courses in Arts, Science & Commerce along with its prevalent structure of affiliation to Utkal University exclusively for +3 Courses.

This year (2011-12) the College has completed its 33rd years. Going back in history, the College had concurrence and affiliation for teaching in English, MIL(O), Education, Economics, History, Logic , Political Science, Sociology, Statistics, Mathematics, Sanskrit , Accounting, Banking in Arts, Eng., Elementary Economics, W.R., B.O., OM & Admn., BM, Accounting , Insurance, Salesmanship in Com. in 1983-84 for +2 Streams and English, MIL (O), Economics, Education, History, Political Science, Oriya, Sanskrit, Philosophy in Arts & university prescribed subjects in Commerce for +3 Streams. And at present going steps forward, the College enjoys the distinction of teaching Honours in Political Science, History, Sociology, Education, Economics, Odia in Arts, Mathematics in Science and Accountancy & Management in Commerce .

The College has also earned another distinction of having the Air Wing of NCC. Besides, to excel in the mission of promoting the youth involvement in social service activities the College has three Units of NSS. It has also its own Wings of Rover & Rangers with a commendable achievement of winning awards and thereby attracting attention in both State and National levels.
