Bhairab College, Dabugaon, named after the presiding deity of Dabugaon, is situated on the Nabarangpur-Raipur road, thirty kilometres away from Nabarangpur situated on the western end of Dabugaon on the main district road in an idylic atmosphere with a fifteen-acre bounded campus covered with a rich teak plantation of its own and on the other side of the road over- sees the dreamy beauty of reserved teak forest.
The location of the college is ideal from the tourist view-point as the famous Jhadeswar Temple, populary known as Kelia Temple, is only 12 kilometres and the historical Podagrah is about 30 kilometres away from the place. More-over the place is known as that of the belligerent freedom fighter Sonu Majhi, a personality of legendary dimensions, whose bust-size statue has been installed on top of the College building in order to honour the son of the soil, who carried cash-prize on his head from the British Government.
The College came up with high hopes and ambitious aspirations of the people of Dabugaon represented and carried forward by the desire and decision of the then MLA of Dabugaon Sri Dambru Majhi, Ex-Minister of Odisha, in 1987 with the active inspiration from the then Chief Minister Sri Janaki Ballabh Pattanaik. At present the college has grown up to be a leading college of the District with more than 650 students in roll from an initial strength of only 18 students. Of course, it offers only Arts in its academic curriculum at present. Now, the college has been accorded permission and affiliation for increase of seats in +2 Arts to 192 and to open +2 Commerce to the tune of 64 seats from the 2012-13 session and has come a long way in fulfilling the long cherished need for the light of higher education in the Dabugaon assembly segment which has a pre-dominantly tribal population and one of the lowest literacy rates.
The institution has been nurtured and nourished by the academic zealots, active public personalities and government agencies as well as the pro-active governing body all the years. To its credit, now it has adequate buildings, library, a huge play- ground and other subsidiary facilities. It has 30 seated post-matric girls hostel in the campus.
Besides, the college has been catering to the learning needs of the academically ambitious members of the general public through a special study centre of the IGNOU.
The Nabarangpur district, to which belongs the Bhairab college, Dabugaon, was carved out of the erst while undivided Koraput district and is rich with cultural heritage and literary traditions to which the college has been trying its best to contribute by participating in related programmes and functions in and outside the district organised by the government and private agencies from time to time in various ways receiving popular accolade.
